These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so. – Acts 17:11

February 22 – “FEAR GOD”

“And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us. But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation? And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.”

Luke 23:39-41

One thief on the cross knew whom to fear. It was not this type of humanistic fear taught by man today. This so-called reverential trust or respect you have of God. Biblical fear of God is the beginning of wisdom. (“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.” Prov. 9:10) (You’re in trouble with God your Creator!) Notice Felix the Governor in (Acts 24:25 “And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.”)

Do not make this same error, my friend! David says in (Ps. 119:120 “My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.”) God is not a push over or a wishy wash, my friend.Even the great man of God, Moses feared: (“Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.” Acts 7:32)   God says, (“Well; because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith. Be not highminded, but fear:” Rom. 11:20)

The scripture in many places gives us what the fear of God is and we must walk in that fear daily. It is unblemished and strong. (“The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.” Ps. 19:9) It is to hate sin and evil. (“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” Prov. 8:13)

Many references throughout God’s Word of His fear we ought to have in ourselves and in our daily living. (“Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;” Ps.33:18)   Cultivate a healthy Fear of the Almighty.
