“Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.”
Psalms 37:4
What do you take delight in? What do you spend most of your time doing, besides work? Making more money. (“Labour not to be rich: cease from thine own wisdom. Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven.” Prov. 23:4-5)
Family and relatives take up all your spare time? (“He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.” Matt. 10:37)
Hobbies, sports, gulfing, boats, camping, traveling, etc. all these taking up your time? No or little time for God, Church, Bible, Witnessing, Lending hand to the Brethren, etc. What doest thou delight in? (“Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.” Ps. 1:1-2) Happy is the man which does not heed or follow the advice or instructions of the wicked. Nor listen to or obey the wisdom of this world. (See Devotional Oct. 9). Yet, happy is he who makes the Lord and His Word his stay and his supply.
David exclaims: (“And I will delight myself in thy commandments, which I have loved.” Ps. 119:47) My, to be as David rejoicing and enjoying (being satisfied and contented) himself in the Lord and His Word. This speaks of David’s strong faith and obedience. Do we manifest the same in our lives? Many references to David in the Psalms taking his delight in the Lord and His Word.
How about obedience to the will of God in our lives? (“I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.” Ps. 40:8) The Lord would have our obedience than to run around in our own thinking and self-will doing this or that. (“And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.” I Sam. 15:22) Obedience proves the amount of love and faith we have in the Lord.
The Apostle Paul even in (Rom. 7:22 “For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:”) He took his enjoyment, his pleasure, his delight in the Word of God. Oh my, where are our hearts at today or tomorrow? The Lord promised He would give us our desires if we would delight ourselves in Him. For when we delight ourselves in Him our desires would be more in tune with His will. (“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” Matt. 6:33)
